Slimline double glazing
Slim Double Glazing for Existing Timber Windows
Traditional timber sash and casement windows are often fitted with single glazing, which can result in heat loss, draughts and reduced comfort throughout the year. Slim double glazing offers an excellent way to improve thermal performance while retaining the appearance and character of your original windows.
At Complete Timber Window Solutions, we can carefully adapt many existing timber windows to accommodate slim double-glazed units where permitted. The existing sashes are removed and assessed before being precisely routed to accept modern slimline glazing units. These specialist units are significantly thinner than standard double glazing, allowing them to replicate the appearance of traditional single-glazed windows while providing improved insulation and comfort.
Where required, we also carry out any necessary timber repairs, replace damaged glazing bars, install new putty-style beading, and fully refurbish the windows as part of the process. The result is a window that retains its original charm while benefiting from modern glazing technology.
For homeowners looking to improve comfort and energy efficiency without losing the character of their original timber windows, slim double glazing can provide an ideal balance between heritage preservation and modern performance. Our team can advise on the most suitable glazing options for your property and whether slim double glazing is appropriate for your windows.
Energy efficiency
Proven to be 8x more energy efficient than original sash window single glazing, using our slim double glazed high quality units will ensure warmth and a reduction in heating costs.
Noise Reduction
Our slim double glazed units combined with our bespoke draught proofing system will cut the level of audible noise from outside dramatically and increase thermal efficiency.
Authentic Appearance
You will be hard pushed to tell the difference from traditional windows. At just 12mm thick, the units will be virtually undetectable. They look like single glazed windows, from inside and out.
Standard 12 mm slim double-glazing units are commonly used in traditional sash and casement windows where the glazing rebate is shallow and cannot accommodate full-depth modern units. These slimmer sealed units are designed to offer enhanced thermal performance while maintaining the original appearance of period or heritage windows. At 12 mm overall thickness—including two panes of glass and a narrow cavity and typically with an aluminium spacer they are a practical compromise between energy efficiency, weight, and compatibility with older frames.
Even with a 12 mm profile, this combination allows slim units to perform significantly better than traditional single glazing while remaining visually discreet.
For sash windows, the lightweight nature of a 12 mm unit is especially important because it preserves smooth operation and avoids overloading the existing sash weights. In casement windows, slim units help maintain the slender sightlines and period detailing that are often lost when deeper, heavier glazing is used. Overall, 12 mm double-glazing units provide an effective balance of heritage appearance and modern performance, offering improved comfort, reduced draughts, and lower heating costs without compromising the character of the window.

Great Company, Highly Recommended
“I been using CTWS to refurb all our wooden windows in phases over the last year or so. They have been great. Attention to detail, restore old windows very sympathetically and have retrofitted slim line double glazing and draft proofing where possible and so now we have beautiful old windows to more modern standards. Would definitely recommend..”
